IAPT Employment Advisors
Are you feeling low in mood, lacking in motivation? Is this affecting your ability to engage in work?
This FREE service provides support for anyone that is experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues that may involve any of the symptoms in the picture, left. And as a result these symptoms may be having an effect on a persons ability to engage in their current work role.
Due to the growing evidence that health, work and well-being are closely linked, Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, as part of the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies national initiative (IAPT), have set up an Employment Adviser support service for people who are struggling with their mental health who are currently employed. The programme has been developed to help people overcome problems affecting their ability to work effectively and support people through a phased return back to work, after a period of ill health.
What the service provides
For the Employee
- Support employees to maintain employment.
- Assisting the employee to find solutions to specific problems.
- Engage with the employee’s employer, in order to keep lines of communication open during sickness absence. (With the employee’s permission).
- Help employee to prepare for a return to work.
- Mediate and facilitate support between the employee and employer before and during a phased return to work process.
- Guidance for managing anxiety, being assertive, challenging fears.
- Direct links into two types of psychological therapy at GP surgeries. High Intensity CBT Therapists, trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for people with moderate and severe depression and anxiety disorders, and Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners are trained in using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques who use guided self help materials to aid in support of mental health awareness and self help strategies.
For the Employer
- A FREE impartial and confidential advice service for employers and employees to identify solutions to work related issues.
- Supporting the employer to maintain skilled employees.
- Negotiation and mediation around work reasonable adjustments, so that the job role becomes more manageable.
- Mediate and facilitate support between the employer and employee during a phased return to work process.
- Keep lines of communication open with the employer and employee at all times.
- Check on employee progress during the phased return to work process.

What if I have already lost my job or am unemployed?
Where clients are not in employment the IAPT EA can give advice and information to signpost clients to mainstream Jobcentre Plus provision and other Hull & East Yorkshire Mind employment projects, such as Initial Steps, Pathways to Work and Forward Thinking.
How to access the service?
Referrals to the Employment Adviser Service can be made through:
- Your GP in East Riding or North Lincolnshire
- IAPT Wellbeing Practitioners or High Intensity CBT Therapists at your GP surgery
- Self referral - See below for contact form.
- Community Mental Health regional teams or other support agency
- Through your employer.
